You Be The Judge
What makes a great farmers market? Read on to see some of the features nation markets have that make them great ... then you decide for yourself.
Producer Market
A producer market allows very little re-selling of products. One of key benefits of shopping at a farmers market is developing a personal relationship with the people who actually produce or make your food. Really, it is....
all about trust.
A producer can speak directly and with authority about where and how the food item is produced. Nearly all markets make an exception for one or two items that cannot be sourced locally (like coffee). The best markets have very, very few ...
What is in a PLU Code?
If you're looking at produce and you want to know whether it's conventionally grown or certified organic, your grocery store should label them accordingly, but if not, the Product Look Up or PLU code on its sticker can tell you.
Many companies avoid using the 8 prefix on GMO produce because they're worried about backlash from customers (and because they are not mandatory.) If you're worried about GMO produce, buying "certified organic" is the only way to make sure you don't get it. PLU codes are universal, and one on the Gala apples at a store in Washington DC (#4133) is the same code that'll you'll see in Los Angeles. You can ...
Why Good Cheese isn’t Cheap
Courtesy of Liz Thorpe at SeriousEats.com
In late January, Saturday Night Live guest Kevin Hart completed the trio of "Bushwick Boys" whose four-minute corner chat about changing neighborhood dynamics included, among other things, gluten-free muffins, $8 artisan mayonnaise, and cheese and wine pairings. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and give it a watch.
I was pleased, if somewhat surprised, to note that mayo has become the new reference point for overpriced "gourmet" food. For the last decade it's been "artisan cheese."
Why, people ask me, is cheese so expensive? And why does local American cheese often cost more than cheese ...
Lettuce Sauce Recipe
Here is the Lettuce Sauce recipe Chef Back demonstrated last weekend. Enjoy!
1 egg yolk
1 head butterhead lettuce
1.5 teaspoons rinsed capers
1 split lemon
1 tablespoon chopped parsley
1 tablespoon chopped shallot
.5 C olive oil
In the work bowl of your food processor, combine egg yolk, lettuce, juice of the lemon, parsley and shallots.
Process until smoothed. While the machine is still running slowly add your oil so it will thicken. Season and chill.
This is a great addition to grilled or smoked salmon or as a dressing on asparagus.
Market Bell
Ringing a cowbell at the beginning and end of each farmers market day is a tradition begun by Louise Estabrook when she was manager. Not only is this great fun (usually accompanied by cheers from the vendors), but it serves a practical purpose as well. Vendors are not permitted to sell products before or after the bell. This creates a level playing field for all vendors. It is also a safety feature since customers will not be on the market avenue while vehicles and products are being moved about.
Monarch butterflies keep disappearing. Here’s why.
By Brad Plumer, Washington Post, January 29, 2014
Every November, millions of monarch butterflies arrive at the Oyamel fir forests in central Mexico, where they migrate to survive through the winter. Or at least that's what's supposed to happen.
In recent years, however, scientists have noticed a disturbing trend: The number of butterflies migrating to Mexico has been dropping sharply. In 2012, just 60 million monarchs arrived at their overwintering habitats, a record low. And fresh data from WWF Mexico suggests that the current winter's numbers are even lower — down to just 33 million butterflies across 0.67 hectares (1.65 acres).

The Chickadee’s Guide to Gardening
March 20th, 2015
OXFORD, Pa. — I grew up thinking little of plants. I was interested in snakes and turtles, then insects and, eventually, birds. Now I like plants. But I still like the life they create even more.
Plants are as close to biological miracles as a scientist could dare admit. After all, they allow us, and nearly every other species, to eat sunlight, by creating the nourishment that drives food webs on this planet. As if that weren’t enough, plants also produce oxygen, build topsoil and hold it in place, prevent floods, sequester carbon ...
